Now, The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog is doing the same thing, and it's showcasing the power of branding and how it can push video games of any genre. It's no surprise that those titles became the company's biggest hits, with The Walking Dead at times harnessing the tension of the comics brought to life in a way that the TV show didn't quite capture. These games many times utilized the biggest IPs in popular culture, including The Walking Dead and Batman. The 2010s saw several graphic adventures released by Telltale Games, who released their titles on various consoles throughout the past few video game generations. Popular IPs Make for Popular Graphic Adventures There's an easy way to fix this issue among those who aren't fans of the genre, however, and it's to simply utilize a franchise or brand that they already love. As such, graphic adventures developed a reputation for being boring. This didn't engender much fandom for the genre among those used to popular interactive titles such as Uncharted, Call of Duty, and similar action games. A notable fusion of these concepts was PlayStation title The Order: 1886, which was heavily criticized by many for taking control of the adventure away from the player. In many ways, point-and-click titles were the predecessors of the "walking simulators" of modern games.
Of course, these titles involved battles, leveling up players with upgrades, and other mechanics, seemingly making them more worthy of being called "games" than graphic adventures.
Story-driven games weren't quite the norm yet, and it was RPGs that mostly made this sort of narrative effort, namely JRPGs such as Final Fantasy. This turned the genre into a niche affair, which made sense given what was popular in mainstream video gaming. It's worth noting that point-and-click games only became somewhat mainstream on consoles in the last decade or so, and this is due to their historical inception and release on PC.
